The Beginning
March 2020 everyones’ world turned upside down with the dawn of the coronavirus pandemic. Work evolved into remote as offices closed their doors, restaurants turned to solely delivery, grocery stores were emptied, and life as we knew it halted. What hit the planet as a terrifying new reality gave individuals and families around the world time to take a step back and think about what really mattered to us. Did we value our careers and the daily grind or did we enjoy being with our families and the simple things in life more? Over the next two years this question plagued us and what started as just The Hermans party of two turned into a party of three with the birth of our daughter in the summer of 2021. After a year of uncertainty we gained a beautiful ray of Hope, and that is what we named her.
With her arrival came a period of even more reflection. What is important to us? What do we truly care about? What direction is this nation moving towards and what part do we play in it? Are we content living in suburbia, receiving letter after letter from the HOA requesting we keep the lawn to a certain standard and apply just to put a swing in the yard for our child? Is it really that convenient being five minutes from the store when the sounds of the freeway, air traffic, trains, and softball fields are an even droning hum inside our own home? All of these factors led us to the big decision of, we need to get back to the country. Fast.
We both grew up in a small town in East Texas. A town that both of our families have inhabited since the the town was founded and descendants of the founders themselves. We aren’t quite sure when we actually met or if we ever did even formally meet but we were always there. We shared classes, lunch tables, bounced into each others friend groups until eventually we just clicked. Our sophomore year of high school we performed in a play as a couple and what started as acting turned into real life. Fast forward to 2017 and we said “I do” surrounded by our family and friends. Life has always been an adventure together so when the concept of starting a farm came into conversation as a joke it pretty quickly turned into a working concept and now close to execution.
Which brings us here, a blog. That thing that basically every millennial does these days but really what better way to document all the exciting things taking place? Maybe we millennials are on to something. We are all certainly flocking to the simple life away from the big cities and cookie cutter lifestyle. So let’s document it so we can fondly look back on all the fun we’ve had while starting this new adventure. Let’s call it...Rowan Ranch.
