The Easter Bunny

The second day of the mini-ex rental was another hit. Jaken continue clearing some stumps and small trees to open up sites to the field and Jeremy got busy using Forky to brushhog the future garden space at the front of the property. This area is a little over an acre of space that is mostly briars and some tress clusters but hasn’t been mown in quite a quite. This is yard that hasn’t quite had much attention or use in many many years either, there are likely tons of berry bushes and snakes hidden away so getting it cleared was another priority project so we can prep the space for a fall garden. While clearing it, Jeremy noticed a little bunny that was in the path of the mower, so he called Jaken over to bring it to safety. Jaken named it Brer, and kept it safe up by the barn while the work continued.

When Brooklyn got back to the prairie she got to meet Brer and what a little tiny sweet thing it is. We attempted to bottle feed it and it only took a small amount so thinking it will need hay.

The next day was Easter Sunday so no working on the property but taking time to visit with family. We finished weaving Hope’s easter basket and then headed out to the prairie. The first stop with Jaken’s dad and step moms to get the basket they made Hope and to let her play in the walker they got for her to use while there. She loved it and kept trying to walk right into the yard with it but had little luck. After that we said hello to Jaken’s grandparents before heading to his mom’s. While there Hope got her basket from them and loved to play with the little plastic eggs. She got some fun play time in with cousin Liam before we headed to Jaken’s step-grandparents.

Hope was all smiles and fun before crashing into a big nap on the way to the property. Jaken’s mom and stepfather hadn’t seen it recently nor had Brooklyn seen the previous days progress. While there we let Brer hop about a bit in the field before hopping ourselves back into the truck and saying hello to Brooklyn’s grandparents. After a quick visit we headed back to Jaken’s dads to pick up their extra truck for Brooklyn to take into work while her car is out of commission.

While there Jaken decided to shift somethings from the bed of his truck and when he opened the tailgate Jeremy noticied something very out of place. “Well on top of a bunny looks like you have a new kitten now too.” We thought he was teasing but sure enough a tiny striped kitten was curled up in the tow straps mewing away. We gathered it up and loved on it before Jaken looked closer and saw THREE MORE KITTENS tucked under the toolbox and shivering. There is no way we can take on a bunny and four kittens!

It was a mystery as to where these kittens came from or how they could have gotten into the bed of the truck. We had made several stops today so they could have been from any of those…but the most probable location was Jaken’s mom’s house as we had left the truck there overnight. The mother cat must had moved her kittens into the truck then. We returned to the house and sure enough the mother was sitting there in the yard waiting. We gathered the kittens in a box, put some soft kitty food nearby and placed them in the shop so mother could reunite with her babies. We headed home then and got Hope’s picture with her Easter basket that we wove and her Easter Bunny.
