The Front Yard

After a string of stressful days for us that involved random work shifts, food poisoning, stomach bug, baby getting sick, and what felt like a million other issues we got a random glimmer of hope. The renters are moving out a month and a half early! That means we can move our property work to the front now that the barn yard has been effectively cleared and organized. This was great news! So we made a plan to head over to the ranch on Saturday to assess the new real estate.

We have been cutting through the hay field to get to the barn area because the renters had a small trailer parked at the end of the typical driveway but now that it is no longer there we can enter the ranch like normal people. Via the front drive. But boy were we surprised when we did. We’ve ridden the four wheeler around the front every once in a while but with the trailer gone it seemed like an entirely new world. It’s been a few years since Brooklyn had been in the front with no house sitting there so to see it again just opened up and ready for a new adventure is quite exhilarating. Jaken’s dad and grandpa were already there with the lawn equipment ready to rock and roll. We did a preliminary walk around the yard to deduce what trees we wanted to keep and what could go.

Much to our surprise there was a fully grown and fruit bearing mulberry tree occupying a decently large area. It was covered in ripe mulberries ready for picking. Beside it a small pear tree also covered in tiny pears. Upon further exploration we also came across a peach tree which was also full of fruit. Finally the old fig tree that we thought was lost had come back and was full of figs! Better learn how to make some jams and jellies quick!

After deducing the keepers and the cleaners we got to work. Jeremy on the mower, Grandpa on the tractor, Jaken on the ground running and lopping and cutting and carrying like a mad man. Brooklyn strapped on the baby and attempted to help carry some branches but that wasn’t super helpful so she decided to take more of an observer roll. After several hours the yard was even more opened up and it really feels like the possibilities are endless out here.

We decided to take a walk around the front gate and noticed some pink ribbon tied to a fence post and another on a tree. We knew the surveyors were out yesterday working on the research so we wondered if that was perhaps the official boundary. We won’t know for sure till the paperwork is done but wouldn’t be awesome if that was the true property line.
