The Harvest

The last half of September proved to be very fruitful for us indeed. After the end of summer rains finally let up and the weather started to “slightly cool” our garden decided to start producing! If you recall we had planted pumpkins and corn as well as started a plethora of seeds. About half of the seeds we started took and could be transplanted and then we decided to direct sow several other veggies to test their abilities.

We planted string beans, butter beans, purple hull peas, rainbow chard, collard greens, watermelons, acorn squash, potatoes, and some more mini pumpkins. Jaken also attempted to start some herbs in pots but those did not appear to take unfortunately. One day we went to check the garden and everything was in bloom! We had little tiny corns growing on the stalks. Collard greens peaking up in bunches, the worlds tiniest watermelon, two acorn squash buds, and two beautiful rows of purple hulls. The potatoes had begun to vine out around the spud we planted.

I was feeling extra garden-y so I ordered some fall flowers to plant in pots and much to my surprise they started sprouting within days. Nothing makes you feel like you are doing good then seeing the seeds you planted begin to grow. The connection to the earth just feels so right. We even managed a pumpkin!

After dutifully fertilizing, watering, and culling we were able to make our first harvest. Two acorn squashes, a handful of string beans, a bucket of purple hulls, a basket of collard greens, and even my sunflowers started to bloom. We made a delicious meal with our bounty and were so grateful to have had this opportunity to learn and literally grow both the land and ourselves.
