The Ranch Grows
A big conversation that’s been happening on the ranch has been “when are we going to expand our livestock”. Just chickens is a poor excuse for a “ranch” and to try to stop needing the grocery store isn’t going to happen with six chickens…so we decided to get a pig.
Kristen and Steven have been wanting to get a little Kuhne Kuhne pig to put over by them for a while too so when Steven found a couple not too far away we decided to pull the trigger and buy them. Jaken had already ordered several electric netting fences from Premier 1 previously and we were just waiting for an excuse to use them. So the boys got the netting set up over by Kristen’s house and then came across the issue of transporting the pigs.
Neither of us have a livestock trailed and no way were we about to let two pigs into the back of my Pilot so time to get creative. We have a small flatbed trailer and Steven has a decent sized dog kennel so they loaded the kennel, strapped it down, and prayed no one would bat an eye before heading off to the farm the pigs live at.
The seller definitely batted an eye. Who picks up a pig in a dog kennel? We do apparently and it worked just fine. That is till they got home and tried to unload the pigs. Obviously the little ladies were a bit stressed out from the move and I wouldn’t be rushing into an unknown place after a ride on the back of a trailer. We had to get a bit creative to get them out and pretty sure some body parts were touched that are intended to be touched by human hands but after about ten minutes the pigs were out of the kennel and in their pen closely followed by Jaken who had to get into the kennel to scoot them out. We put them some food into their bowls and they settled right in.
The weather was going to get cold the next day so Steven built them a little shelter and got them a bed of hay to cozy up in and they seemed right at home.
This time of year a yellow flower also blooms on our Paw-paw’s birthday and they were everywhere in the field where the pigs are being kept so we had to get some cute pictures of the babies in them.
And with that we upgraded to two critter farmers. Chicken and pigs. Wonder what will come next?
